STL Simplifier

Simplify STL, OBJ or STEP meshes of up to 30,000 triangles locally. Adjust the vertex keep percentage, preview changes and export the reduced triangle mesh.

Enable JavaScript to open a model and use the interactive workspace.

How do I use this tool?

  1. Choose an OBJ, STL or STEP model from your device.
  2. Preview your model and adjust the settings.
  3. Create your output and download the result.

What does this tool do?

Edge-collapse simplification is a lossy operation. Small features, boundaries and sharp edges may change. The keep percentage applies to vertices; the resulting triangle count is shown. Supports up to 30,000 input triangles.

What are the file limits?

Models are processed locally. Inputs are limited to 50 MB per file and 500,000 triangles after import. Individual operations may have lower limits described below. Performance depends on your device.

JavaScript, WebAssembly and WebGL are required for the interactive workspace.

How are models processed?

Mesh loading and rendering use Three.js. STEP import and tessellation use occt-import-js, based on Open Cascade. These sources describe the underlying libraries; this tool's supported features and limits are listed on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest STL mesh I can simplify?

The simplifier accepts up to 30,000 input triangles. The general 500,000-triangle import limit does not increase this simplification limit. Larger models need to be reduced in another application first.

Does Keep 50% mean exactly half as many triangles?

No. The percentage controls how many vertices the algorithm tries to keep. The resulting triangle count depends on the mesh topology and is shown after processing. Check that result before exporting.

Is mesh simplification lossless?

No. Edge-collapse simplification changes the surface. Small details, thin features, open boundaries and sharp edges can change. Compare the result with the original and use Restore original if the loss is unacceptable.

Can I choose a target file size in megabytes?

No. This tool reduces geometry rather than targeting an exact byte size. The final size depends on the output format and encoding as well as the number of triangles. Export and inspect the downloaded file size.
