STL to OBJ Converter
Convert binary or ASCII STL to OBJ in your browser. Preview the mesh, choose source units and download geometry for editing, with no model file uploads.
Enable JavaScript to open a model and use the interactive workspace.
How do I use this tool?
- Choose a STL file from your device.
- Preview your model and adjust the settings.
- Create your output and download the result.
What does this tool do?
Both binary and ASCII STL files are supported. STL has no explicit unit: choose the unit used when the file was created.
What are the file limits?
Models are processed locally. Inputs are limited to 50 MB per file and 500,000 triangles after import. Individual operations may have lower limits described below. Performance depends on your device.
JavaScript, WebAssembly and WebGL are required for the interactive workspace.
How are models processed?
Mesh loading and rendering use Three.js. STEP import and tessellation use occt-import-js, based on Open Cascade. These sources describe the underlying libraries; this tool's supported features and limits are listed on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert both binary and ASCII STL to OBJ?
Yes. Open either STL encoding, confirm the source unit, and select Export OBJ. Each input must be no larger than 50 MB and contain no more than 500,000 triangles.
Will converting STL to OBJ restore textures or materials?
No. This conversion exports the mesh geometry. It does not create texture images, a UV layout or an external MTL file from information that the STL does not contain.
Can I use the exported OBJ in Blender?
OBJ is a mesh interchange format supported by Blender. Import the downloaded OBJ, then check a known dimension and orientation. The result remains a triangle mesh, without the original CAD features or construction history.
Does STL to OBJ conversion make the surface smoother?
No. Changing the file format keeps the triangle surface rather than reconstructing curves or adding detail. A larger OBJ file does not mean that the geometry is more accurate.
